I get asked all the time if my son and I realize how lucky we are to meet and interact with all the incredible tennis people we do. The answer is a resounding YES! We both recognize that ParentingAces has opened some amazing doors for us. My son told me very recently that the best lesson that’s come out of this adventure is learning how to recognize those open doors and developing the curiosity and confidence to walk through them.
When I started ParentingAces almost 3 years ago, I never in a million years imagined it would morph into what it is today. This little “blog” started purely as a labor of love, a way for me to document my tennis journey with my son. And, I still try to stay true to that initial mission even as I get involved in the politics and business of the game. I hope I’m finding a good enough balance between the personal and the not-so-personal pieces I write. I don’t want to get bogged down in the backstage world of tennis, but I do feel like ParentingAces – both this website and the radio show – has become a sort of open forum for all of us to discuss what’s going on in the game and maybe effect some positive changes.
That said, I do want to stay focused on my son’s journey and my role in it, especially now that his junior tennis years are coming to a rapid close. Maybe through sharing our experiences I can help other families avoid some of the mistakes we’ve made along the way. Maybe I can help our governing bodies see what’s working and what isn’t. Maybe I can help coaches do a better job at communicating with parents and working as a team to help young players reach their potential.
So, thank you, Tennis, for the gifts you have given us so far. I suspect there are many more to come.
